London & Lake District!
When I graduated in June, I decided (with the help and blessing of my family) to celebrate with a literary pilgrimage to the Lake District, where Beatrix Potter, the Romantics, etc. used to hang out and go for long walks among the sheep and fells. I found an old National Trust farmhouse in Cumbria through Airbnb, and it turned out to be EVERYTHING—even more perfect that I’d hoped for. Kate, my host = the kindest, smartest, coolest woman in the world. Plus, she’s an incredible photographer.
Each morning, after I’d watched the sun rise over the 300-year-old sycamore tree and taken a bath, Kate would put out a spread with homemade jam and fresh eggs, and then we’d go about our days. I wandered through the rocky fields just outside the front door, stopping to read or recite poems, including “Song” by Brigit Pegeen Kelly (may she rest in peace). At night, I’d sit in front of the fire, drink wine, and sort through my own work. Yes, this trip was that ridiculous.
I will remember this trip for the rest of my life. Hawes Farm has imprinted on my heart. Already can't wait to go back.
